Cleveland Classical Guitar Weekend, Sept 5-7

Please note that Classical Guitar Weekend, Cleveland’s biggest classical guitar event of the year, has moved to this September 5-7. (There will be no March 2009 Classical Guitar Weekend). Please join us at this weekend’s event.

Presented by Guitars International, in cooperation with the Cleveland Institute of Music and the Case Western Reserve University Department of Music, this September’s Classical Guitar Weekend features recitals by:

Gary Demos Guitars - 650 scale X-braced classical with Indian Rosewood and Engelmann spruce

Gary Demos is a luthier located in Columbus, Ohio. He has been an accomplished carpenter and craftsman for over 30 years. Gary has made harps, dulcimers, and classical and steel string guitars.

His “day-job” is president of Dave Fox Remodeling. He built his first guitar in 1992 along with 3 harps and 3 dulcimers. He got back into guitar building last summer (of 2006).

    Classical guitar festival this weekend in Oneonta

    The seventh annual Classical Guitar Festival will be held Saturday and Sunday at the Unitarian Universalist Church, 12 Ford Ave., Oneonta, and the Wilber Mansion, 11 Ford Ave. Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. Saturday at the church.

    The festival includes mini-performances and lectures by members of the Classical Guitar Society of Upstate New York throughout the day on Saturday, beginning at 9 a.m. Pakistani-born guitar virtuoso and composer Mir Ali will present a one-hour open discussion/seminar on “The Guitarist as Composer” at 11 a.m. Ali also will perform a concert of original works at 4 p.m.

    Saturday’s performance line-up will culminate with a 7 p.m. concert by New York City-born guitarist and composer Mark Delpriora, featuring recently discovered music from the Segovia archives. Delpriora is co-chair of the guitar department at the Manhattan School of Music. A reception will follow the concert.
